Gingivitis is a relatively common condition that refers to the inflammation of the gums. It is usually caused by a buildup of plaque on and around the teeth, but it may also be caused by malnutrition, allergies, or injuries to the gums. It is considered to be a non-destructive periodontal disease, but it can lead to more severe conditions and even tooth loss if it is left untreated.

Symptoms of Gingivitis

While mild cases of gingivitis might not show any symptoms, those with more severe cases might experience tender or receding gums. Sometimes gums might be bright red or bleed while brushing and flossing. For some, it means having chronic bad breath.

Causes of Gingivitis

There are two types of gingivitis plaque-induced and non-plaque induced. Plaque-induced is the most common and the primary cause is the buildup of plaque on the teeth. However, it can also be caused by some types of medications, systemic factors, and even malnutrition.

Non-plaque induced is not solely the result of the buildup of plaque. Instead, it is often caused by a virus, fungus, or bacteria. Genetic factors, wounds, and reactions to a foreign body (like dentures) can also be a cause. For some, an allergic reaction or illness is behind the disease. And for many, there is not a specific cause.
